Stop and Start on C3



With the Stop and Start, the engine stops just before the vehicle comes to a standstill (traffic lights, traffic jams, etc.). It starts again automatically and instantaneously as soon as the driver takes his foot off the brake pedal to move forward again.

A more relaxed and enjoyable drive

With its exceptional – and immediately perceptible – benefits, the Stop and Start is a more relaxed and undemanding car to drive, particularly when the engine is in standby :
  • hearing comfort for passengers, and respect for other people
  • hearing comfort also, with the instant engine start-up, which is silent and transparent to the occupants
  • physical comfort, owing to the absence of engine vibration.

This relaxed approach does not detract from driving pleasure. Quite the contrary. Stop and Start uses a discreet easy-to-learn technique that requires no change in driving style and that actually enhances driving pleasure.

Lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

Stopping and starting the engine repeatedly no longer causes excess fuel consumption. The reversible alternator and electronic fuel injection bring fuel savings of around 10%, or 18 g of CO2/km, in the city. Over a standard combined cycle, savings are close to 6%.

A simple operation


When the driver applies the brakes to stop the car, the engine cuts out just before the car comes to a complete standstill (speed of less than 6 km/h). A green "eco" indicator lights up on the instrument cluster. The clutch is open. The engine remains in standby for as long as the driver keeps a foot on the brake pedal, even if the pressure is slight. When the driver releases the brake pedal, the engine starts up again automatically and instantaneously. The green "eco" indicator is switched off. When the driver presses the accelerator pedal down, the clutch gradually closes (SensoDrive gearbox).

The driver can deactivate the "Stop and Start" system at any time, using the "eco off" button on the central fascia. In this case, the car will function in the same way as a conventional SensoDrive vehicle. Pressing the button again will reactivate the function. The “Stop & Start” system is reactivated automatically whenever the car is started.

The system comprises two key components:

  • a 2 kW reversible alternator performing the functions of both starter and alternator (supplying electricity to the onboard network), replacing the conventional alternator. The main advantages of using an alternator for start-up are silence and speed (400 ms compared with 800 ms for a conventional starter) ;
  • an electronic unit, which manages the alternator and provides a link with the engine control unit and built-in systems interface.

The system is completed by a battery, a special belt and a belt tensioner.
