Hydropneumatic suspension on DS
Citroën became interested in suspension systems at a very early stage.
He recognised the importance of the links between the vehicle and the road in guaranteeing the safety and comfort of the people travelling in the car.
The hydropneumatic suspension system replaced the conventional mechanical springs by two fluids: a liquid (mineral oil) and a gas (nitrogen). The gas is the elastic component. An incompressible fluid provides the link between the moving mechanical parts of the suspension and the gas (spring). Hydropneumatic suspension combines a highly flexible system with a constant height, regardless of load.
Introduced on the Traction Avant 15/6H and brought into general use on the DS, hydropneumatic suspension has been at the basis of Citroën’s supremacy in roadholding and comfort since 1954.
