1970 - 1979

• The Aulnay-sous-Bois factory (Paris region) comes into operation. Designed to gradually take over the work of the Quai de Javel plant, Aulnay is one of the most modern factories of its day with its body-assembly transfer lines, automated paintshop, computer-controlled parts transfer and production systems.
  
  
• Fiat withdraws from Pardevi and returns its 49% stake to Michelin. Fiat and Citroën continue to undertake specific joint industrial and commercial ventures.
  
  
• In the Moroccan Rally, three DS23s driven by Neyret-Terramorsi, Bochnicek-Kernmayer and Ponnelle-de Serpos finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
  
  
• After the huge success of the Paris-Kabul-Paris long-distance rally, Citroën organizes "Raid Afrique", an 8,000 km rally from Abidjan (Ivory Coast) to Tunis (Tunisia). Over one hundred young people take part in teams of two, all driving 2CVs.

GS : technical picture

• February sees the launch of the Ami Super, a car with the Ami body but the 1,015 cm³ 4-cylinder 6 bhp engine of the GS: 61 bhp at 6,750 rpm, 140 km/h.
  
  
  
• The Paris Motor Show unveils the GS Birotor, prior to its launch in March 1974. The tests carried out with the M35 contributed to the development of a new Comotor rotary-piston engine, this time with twin rotors; 1,990 cm³, 107 bhp DIN at 6,500 rpm. Rated 11 bhp, the car has a 3-speed gearbox, travels at 175 km/h and consumes 12.8 litres/100 km. The GS Birotor is quieter and more responsive than the standard GS. It is produced in 847 examples between March 1973 and March 1975.

• September sees the launch of the SM Automatic, with an enlarged 2,965 cm³ engine (the standard electronic injection engine is offered with an automatic gearbox), 190 bhp SAE at 6,500 rpm, 17 bhp, 205 km/h, 13.48 litres/100 km. The SM automatic is built in 1,612 examples between September 1973 and September 1975.
